The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is urging consumers to discontinue use of 5X5 brand motorcycle helmets that fail to meet federal safety regulations.

The advisory affects about 14,000 5X5/SA-08 model helmets imported and distributed by Tank Sports, which declared bankruptcy without completing a recall requested by NHTSA. The agency doesn’t believe the helmets are currently for sale in the country, however it advises motorcyclists to discard these helmets immediately and not to use them while riding.

During tests, both the outer shell and the inner liner in three out of four helmets were penetrated, which violates a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. NHTSA isn’t aware of any complaints, injuries, or incidents regarding the helmet.
