Even though February was a short month, the number of food recalls was high. Manufacturers, retailers, and importers announced a total of 23 food recalls last month.
That’s up from 19 in January.
A lot of that growth was in the “protein” section of ConsumerBell’s food plate, largely because of the series of egg recalls stemming from Michael Foods. The eggs could have been contaminated with listeria, which prompted retailers and food establishments that purchased from Michael Foods.
Even with news that raw milk is 150 times more likely to cause foodborne illness outbreaks than pasteurized milk, dairy recalls decreased to a perfect zero this month. If Team Dairy were a thing, I’d tell it to give itself a pat on the back.
Our fruit category almost hit that magic zero, as well. In fact, it might have. We weren’t really sure where to put the the recalled strawberry sandwich bars. Grain because of bread? Protein because of peanut butter? Fruit because of strawberries? What a dilemma!
