I had just put my homemade eggnog pumpkin pie in the oven this morning when Ryan, our product manager, said there had been a canned pumpkin recall. Since I went the slightly-lazy way and used canned pumpkin, I grew concerned:

A canned pumpkin recall the day before Thanksgiving. I can’t imagine a more inconvenient time.

Giant Eagle, a supermarket chain with stores located in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland, recalled on Wednesday all Valu Time brand canned pumpkin purchased on or after August 30, 2011, as well as all Food Club brand canned pumpkin purchased on or after October 28, 2011.

The reason for the recall is not immediately known; information from Giant Eagle lacked any description of the potential hazard, just listing on their website that the product “Does not meet quality standards” and should not be consumed. The recall was not listed on the FDA‘s site as of Thursday.

Giant Eagle instructs consumers to discard the product and contact the store for a refund. A store we called in Maryland said they were open normal business hours today.
