Cochlear Ltd., the world’s largest manufacturer of hearing implants, announced a recall this week of its Nucleus CI512 implants after receiving an increased number of reports of failures. Consumer Recall Safety - Cochlear ImplantCohclear didn’t say how many of its hearing implants failed, but they did say they would launch an investigation into why they failed.

Cochlear’s statement said that less than 1 percent of CI512 implants have failed since 2009, but the recent increase in failures is prompting their voluntary recall.

The Australian company said that recipients of the rest of the CI500 series can continue to use their implants like normal, and that recipients with a broken CI512 implant can receive a Nucleus Freedom implant as a replacement.
