Salinas, Calif.-based Organicgirl Produce has recalled 336 cases of its 10-ounce baby spinach packs with a use-by date of May 22 due to potential Salmonella contamination.

The bags with Product Code 11A061167 were distributed in Alabama, North Carolina, Oregon, Wisconsin, Arizona, and California.

Organicgirl recalled the spinach after the FDA alerted the company about a positive salmonella test in a single bag of spinach by a third-party laboratory. OrganicGirl is conducting an internal investigation.

According to the statement, “organicgirl raw product testing records for the relevant time period did not show the presence of any pathogens.”

No illnesses have been connected with the recall.

Salmonella is a bacterium that causes one of the most common intestinal infections in the United States–Salmonellosis.  Symptoms of Salmonellosis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.  In mild cases diarrhea may be non-bloody, occur several times per day, and not be very voluminous; in severe cases it may be frequent, bloody and/or mucoid, and of high volume.  Whereas the diarrhea typically lasts 24 to 72 hours, patients often report fatigue and other nonspecific symptoms lasting 7 days or longer.

Retailers are asked to check inventories and store shelves to confirm none of the potentially-affected product is present or available for purchase by consumers. Retailers have been contacted by organicGirl.

Consumers with questions may call the organicgirl Produce consumer hotline at 831-758-7810 Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Pacific Standard Time.
